DEHN protects wind turbines

DEHN offers comprehensive solutions for onshore and offshore wind turbines – from planning through individual lightning protection concepts to specific measures and products for protecting wind turbines from failure caused by lightning currents and surges. Visit DEHN, a full line provider for surge protection, lightning protection/earthing and safety equipment, at WindEnergy in Hamburg (hall B5, booth B5.324) from 27 – 30 September 2016 and find out about our comprehensive practice-oriented concepts and solutions for protecting your investment.

Protection solutions from DEHN protect both power supply and information technology systems from the effects of lightning strikes and surges. The portfolio includes selected high-quality products for protecting wind turbines from the blade tip to the foundation. The adapted protection products from DEHN protect medium- voltage systems and data networks and meet all requirements even under extreme conditions. Specific applications are, for example, the protection of generators, pitch drives, turbines, controllers, inverters and earthing which increases system operation and availability in the long term and sustainably secures investments.

This can be achieved, for example, by means of the new DEHNguard® DG SE H 1000 VA FM arrester. Specifically developed for protecting wind turbines from surges (e.g. for DFIGs – Double Fed Induction Generators), this powerful new arrester is rated for voltages up to 1000 V and discharge currents up to 40 kA (8/20μs). The integrated series connection of a varistor and a gas discharge tube ensures that the arrester does not operate in case of voltages up to 2,200 Vpeak. Nevertheless, an extremely low voltage protection level is achieved. The high discharge capacity and absence of leakage currents ensures a long service life of the surge protective device. The function of the arrester is monitored by a visual status indication and a remote signalling contact. The surge protective device can be installed easily and space- efficiently (only 1.5 standard DIN modules per pole) and is vibration and shock-proof.

Moreover, DEHN will inform about numerous services, for example the design of lightning protection concepts for entire wind turbines, operation buildings and offshore platforms as well as the design of earthing concepts for concrete and hybrid towers. In addition, lightning current tests can be performed for system components up to 400 kA, for example for rotor blades, in the in-house test centre. This comprehensive service portfolio allows to specifically protect wind turbines and their components from the direct and indirect effects of lightning strikes and other transients.
